Our Romania customer upgraded with Hammer C3 31 with Sheartak spiral cutterhead. Their carpenter was very happy to use it, he processed wood of normal hardness. But after a week of use he noticed that part of the board got slight burnt. He processed linden and cherry wood, and at first everything went perfectly (Fig 1).

But after a few days he noticed that the cherry planks were not going so well, and burns began to appear where there were knots (Fig 2). He took some close-up pictures of the knives. The knives are not completely blunt, but his is afraid that if he continues like this, in a short time the burns might go even harder.

I did some research on google and found that burns typically occur due to the following two reasons:

1. Dull knives: While it's unlikely that the knives are dull (Fig. 3) since the cutterhead doesn't cut for extended periods.

I noticed the resin residues on the edges, which may causing more cutter friction against the board. (Fig. 4).

2. Feed roller slipping: Inconsistencies in pushing the board forward through the cutterhead can cause pausing, leading to burns. To address this, we would like to recommend to consider the following.

a) Using a more powerful powerfeed.

b) Slightly reducing the feeding speed.

c) Decreasing the cutting thickness.

d) Waxing the table.

We appreciate any suggestions and feedbacks. Thank you in advance for share your expertise and experience with us. Please write to mike@sheartak.com.
