How to Measure The Cutting Circle of A Cutterhead

20/02/2023 Mike

For 1-blade or 3-blade cutterheads, the cutting circle cannot be measured directly. Instead, you can calculate the circle by measuring the two sizes indicated in figures (2) and (3).

Looking to measure the cutting circle of your jointer or planer cutterhead? Most jointers or planers come with either 2, 3, or 4 blades. To measure the cutting circle of a 2-blade or 4-blade cutterhead, simply measure the distance between two opposite edges, as shown in the top picture. However, for 1-blade or 3-blade cutterheads, the cutting circle cannot be measured directly. Instead, you can calculate the circle by measuring the two sizes indicated in figures (2) and (3). For this task, a regular caliper, even one that's not an industrial standard, will suffice. If you have any questions, feel free to email us at sales@sheartak.com or call (519) 880-8181.
